The Kentucky Natural Gaited Horse Association was formed in 2000 as a not-for-profit organization whose primary goal is to promote breeding, that is consistent with the characteristics of the natural gaited horse: a good temperament, a natural flowing four-beat gait, a good conformation and well-proportioned body structure, an ability to concisely maneuver in all types of terrain, and overall intelligence.

The Kentucky Natural Gaited Horse Association established the lineage of the natural gaited horse through DNA Testing and became a recognized breed in the year 2022.
